I believe what Albert Schweitzer wrote is true. In addition to our vocation, we also need an avocation, something we love to do and something that brightens the lives of others. I love the ministry. That is my vocation. In a sense it is an avocation as well, but still it is my job. My avocation, my hobby outside my job that helps to center me and through which I think helps build the Beloved Community is my volunteer work at Portland’s Community Radio Station, KBOO, 90.7 www.kboo.fm
I want you to know what I do there and what time I spend there. Over the years I have served on many community boards and what not including serving on committees with the various presbyteries in which I have been a member. Now, the only board I serve is the KBOO foundation board. I volunteer there as well. I am the engineer and break announcer from 7-9 am on Mondays and Thursdays. I also produce my two radio programs, Progressive Spirit and Beloved Community on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 to noon. In addition to the shows, I occasionally produce a news or public affairs piece.

KBOO shall be a model of programming, filling needs that other media do not, providing programming to unserved or underserved groups. KBOO shall provide access and training to those communities. KBOO news and public affairs programming shall place an emphasis on providing a forum for unpopular, controversial, or neglected perspectives on important local, national, and international issues, reflecting KBOO’s values of peace, justice, democracy, human rights, multiculturalism, environmentalism, freedom of expression, and social change. KBOO’s arts, cultural, and musical programming shall cover a wide spectrum of expression from traditional to experimental, and reflect the diverse cultures we serve. KBOO shall strive for spontaneity and programming excellence, both in content and technique.
I also think that the shows I produce at KBOO complement the work we do at Southminster. In many respects, our statements in terms of our values and commitments are similar. The shows I produce have to do with values.
Progressive Spirit is a weekly half-hour program through which I bring scholars, activists, authors, artists, and others to talk about their work in issues related to spirituality, religion, and social justice. I have produced this show for nearly five years and you can find more about it and subscribe to podcasts at www.progressivespirit.net
Beloved Community is a show produced especially for broadcast on KBOO, 90.7 FM. It is more political in nature and it offers resources for activism. While some of these early shows have shared some guests in common with Progressive Spirit, from now on, it will be quite distinct. It airs on the second Friday of every month from 9-10 a.m. Podcasts are available at the Progressive Spirit website above and at http://www.kboo.fm/program/beloved-community. My last show, an interview with Matthew Fox, I think was one of the best interviews I have had.
