Dear Friends,
I have enjoyed the Lent Round Robin with my progressive colleagues and hope you have as well. On Sunday, April 10 at 5:30 pm at Cedar Hills United Church of Christ, everyone in all the participating churches is invited to a potluck. The ministers had a chance to meet other folks and you had a chance to hear the other clergy. Now we will have the opportunity to connect with other progressive folks in other congregations. Please mark your calendar!
We are adding a service for Maundy Thursday, March 24. We will begin with a soup supper at 6:30pm and at 7:00pm we will move to a service to commemorate the Jesus’ last supper with his disciples. We will need five or so pots of soup and some bread. If you would like to prepare soup let me know!
Maundy comes from the Latin, mandatum, which means commandment. The words mandate and command derive from it. Maundy Thursday (Commandment Thursday) is called that because of the commandment Jesus gave to his disciples:
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34
He demonstrated this commandment by washing the disciples’ feet. So we are going to do that, too! For those who wish to participate we will have a foot-washing ceremony (wear slippers or sandals). We will celebrate communion, reflect on some scripture, and prepare our hearts for Good Friday and Easter.
On Good Friday, March 25, the sanctuary will be open from noon to 3:00pm for anyone to come for meditation and prayer.
Then of course, Easter Sunday, March 31, when we flower the cross!
I hope you have a meaningful Holy Week.
Blessed Be,
John
